Deconditioned again

I don’t know what to do about Crossfit. In order to swim better, I have to swim a lot, and lately that’s been five days a week, rather than doing Crossfit five days a week. I simply don’t have time for both. But I realized I hadn’t lifted in almost three weeks, which is also not good. So I did three pitiful lifts and called it a day:

BS:

45×5
115×5
125×5
135×5
135×4(F)

My legs were gassed. After THAT.

Press:

45×5
65×5
75×5
80×5
85×4(F)
85×3

Clean:

45×5
65×5
75×5
85×5
95×5

Meh. Finished with some one-armed handstands. At least I can still do that. And push-ups.

I’ll probably go to doing Crossfit 2x/week and jamming all my lifts in over those two days and trying to get my metcon in the pool. I have been doing interval training in the pool, and working up a sweat (yes, it is definitely possible). Swimming is hard in a completely different way and I still don’t have the endurance to do what I need to do. At the same time, I can’t lose all my strength, otherwise it will be post-Katrina all over again with no baby to show for it.

Swimming/Bear Complex

Posted in bear complex, presses, swimming with tags , , on May 5, 2012 by coughingsparks

My lower back is not so great. But, I have an appointment with the chiro next Friday, so hopefully all will be well soon.

I did a swim yesterday, which was not timed; I was just trying to get from one end of the pool to the other. Not so easy when you suck at freestyle. But I persevered, even though I was frustrated and I can do one lap of freestyle without stopping. That’s down, but not back. More practice is needed.

Today, I did a 5×3 press, which was a pretty poor showing:

45×5
75×3
80×3
85×3
90×3
95×3
65×8

Got the 95 up just barely. Finished with a Bear Complex that was actually pretty good, five rounds for weight of:

-7 HPC
-7 PP
-7 FS
-7 PP
-7 BS

I did 45-55-60-65-70, 10# heavier than last time and 5# from my PR. Not too shabby.

Stupid Shoes

Posted in presses, thrusters with tags , on April 21, 2012 by coughingsparks

Boy was today a frustrating day. I went to the gym this morning with the best of intentions to get my butt into the swimming pool and…do something. Anything. Unfortunately, the pool was closed because the power went out the other day (at my house also) and when it came back on it caused a power surge that apparently destroyed something fancy and electronic that makes the pool work. Um, it’s a cement hole with water in it. It’s not that complicated. Whatever, the pool was closed and I didn’t have a Plan B. Luckily for me, I was wearing workout clothes because that’s what I put on this morning, but then I put on Crocs thinking I was going to go swimming anyway. So, I had 1.) No socks, 2.) No deodorant (yuk), 3.) No music and, most importantly 4.) stupid, stupid shoes.

But I had to do something because myself and my baby were now both at the gym. So, I did my best in my stupid shoes. I did 5×3 press:

45×5
65×3
75×3
85×3
90×3
95×3

I was sort of slipping all over the place and couldn’t figure out what to do, so I did Death by Thrusters, which is one thruster the first minute, two the second minute, etc., with 65# and got ten rounds which is exactly what I got back in December. I suck. My shoes suck.

That is all.

DL, Press, Grace in Your Face

Posted in dead lifts, grace, presses with tags , , on April 10, 2012 by coughingsparks

Did a not-too-bad 3-set of DL yesterday:

45×5
135×3
155×3
175×3
195×3
215×3
225×3
230×3

I need to remember the fractional plates. Using 2 1/2# plates I think may help me out of my slump. Of course, that doesn’t really apply on today’s press:

45×5
65×3
75×3
85×3
90×3
95×3

So I met what I usually do. Too bad Island doesn’t have 1# plates.

My plan for metcon today was going to be the 2nd WoD from Guerilla Fitness 2010, which involves a lot of front squat and double-unders, but there was a guy using the Oly platform for, like, a really long time. He was wearing Vibrams and doing clean and jerk starting with a body bar and ending with, like 85# or so, doing split jerk with pretty immature form. Whatever, you have to start somewhere, but I was in a pretty bad mood and could see my allotted hour (only have from about 0910 to 1005 if I push it on non-work days because of child care, and 0910 to 0945 on work days) slipping away, so I finally asked him how much longer. I could tell that I was cutting him short but he’d been on for about 20 minutes and there’s only one Oly platform so I needed to know in case I would have to change my plans. He graciously said he was on his last set.

At that point, I had about eight minutes left, not enough for the 15-minute-capped WoD I had in mind (that I’ve never actually done in under 15 minutes, by the way), so I was already changing my plans. So he moved to a squat rack for whatever and I decided to do Grace as Rx’d with my remaining time, rubbing it right in his pleasant, unassuming face:

-30 C&J (135#/95#)

I killed it in 6:11, blowing away my pre-Katrina time of seven and change. I was childishly enraged at having to wait for the only Oly platform in the place even though he was using it legitimately. A little, mean part of me wanted to show him how it was done, too (dip and drive, get UNDER the weight, lightning-quick elbows, ’cause you can’t just go up to people, especially a dude when you’re a chick and say, “fella, you’re doing it WRONG”). Another part of me was frustrated about not making many, if any gains lately. I sort of couldn’t stand him for being able to take his sweet-ass time with his exercise routine while I was counting every second, making calculations bout how long it takes to change my shoes and how many sets would it take to work up to 95# in as few as possible. I did Grace very bitchily this time around. Very bitchily. When I was finished I told him he could have the platform back.

I sort of hate myself right now.

I wish Innocuous Vibram Man luck with his Oly lifting.

Max effort DL, Presses, Wallball, TTB

Posted in dead lifts, knees-to-elbows, presses, wall ball with tags , , , on April 3, 2012 by coughingsparks

Did a max effort DL yesterday and PR’d:

45×5
135×5
155×5
175×5
195×3
215×3
225×1
235×1
245×1

20# more than last time, and 10# shy of my pre-Katrina 1RM. OK.

Did the same 5×3 press that I’ve been doing for three months:

45×5
65×3
75×3
85×3
90×3
95×3

Finished with CFNYC’s WoD of five rounds for time of:

-12 Wall Ball (20/14)
-12 TTB

I did it in 8:29 with a 16# ball and I started with TTB, did like 4 of them and realized I wouldn’t be able to do them, so switched to hanging leg curls.

My diet has been really bad lately. Drinking my calories at work is OK, to a point, in that it keeps me from dying and provides nutrition, sorta, but when I get home, all I want is comforting carbs and sugar. I got through today without refined carbs, and bought some trail mix to hopefully try instead, maybe at work, but I don’t know. I’ve plateaued on my lifts and I’m exhausted all the time and my knees hurt. Getting old sucks.

OTOH, I bought a bathing suit today, my first one-piece in a really long time. And this is a real bathing suit too, like, made for sports. I also got some goggles and a cap. I’ve turned in my form for the triathlon and the hospital is sponsoring our team, so I guess I’m really doing this thing. I’d better hit the pool soon…

Wha?

Yesterday, I did pretty much the same press that I’ve done lately:

45×5
65×5
75×5
80×5
85×5
90×2(F)

I have failed at 90 the past few times. Whatever.

Onward and upward. Did an older CFNYC WoD, which I underestimated, but was still nice and short for the work day, five rounds for time of:

-Power Clean 95#
-Box Jump 20″

Got it as Rx’d in 6:00. This one really, really gasses your legs. I know, duh, right? Anyway, it’s a good, short workday WoD that made my lungs burn.

So, when I got to work, I somehow got talked into doing the swimming portion of the Cayuga Lake Triathlon, which is swimming, like, half a mile. WTF? I don’t know how to swim. I mean, I can move through the water without drowning (probably), but I am soooo not a swimmer. Anyway, it’s 128 days away as of now, and ironically, it is the weekend following Strongman, which requires a completely different kind of training. Oh well, broad time and modal domains, amirite?

Help me, help me, help me!

Annie, Thrusters

Posted in annie, competition, fran, overhead squats, presses with tags , , , , on March 25, 2012 by coughingsparks

Friday I did an attempt at a 1RM press, which was not as good as I had hoped:

45×5
65×3
75×3
80×2
85×2
90×1
95×1
100×1
105×0(F)
105×0(F)

Oh well. But I killed Annie, like blew it out of the water, as Rx’d:

50-40-30-20-10
-Sit-ups
-Double unders

Did it in 11:03 which beats my PR by about a minute and a half. Who knew? I did the sit-ups unbroken, and my abs were very sore yesterday.

Yesterday, did an OHS, which was an attempt just to get back into it because I never do them any more and I used to be pretty good:

45×5
65×5
75×5
75×5

That was a good start. I finished with CFNYC’s 12.5 prep, which was five rounds of AMRepsAP, one minute on, one minute off of:

-Thrusters 95#/65#
-Chest-to-bar pull-ups

I got through one round and had to go and change K’s diaper. Aaaargh!! At least it was only one round. So I had to start over again, and I got:

Thrusters: 17-13-15-13-13 (71)
Pull-ups: 5-5-4-4-4 (22)

I was somewhat strategic about the pull-ups because I would do as many as I could at the start, one at 30 seconds, and one at, like, 55. So my total was 93.

I scaled it, but not like I normally do. I did regular pull-ups. Really.
