I didn’t have a ton of time today, so all I did at Lang was conditioning, which, although Coach Dave may not realize it, is actually a CrossFit WOD:

With a 20# vest on, 10 rounds for time of:
-MMA Bag carry twice around the circumference of the mat
-30 fist strikes (any kind)

My time was 17:42, which was definitely not the slowest, but was one of the fastest. I also probably could have picked up my run a bit if my toe wasn’t f’d up. I finished with 400 med ball slams. Great day.

Day 3 of MMA today and I broke my f**king toe. We were doing take downs from standing and I went over forward and bent my second toe the wrong way. I suspected that I broke it at that point, but I was definitely all hopped up on adrenalin and endorphins so sort of sucked it up. The minute I finished, my toe turned black. The problem is that I have two surgical fusions in that foot, and one of them is in that toe, at the proximal joint, leaving the only flexibility in the distal joint, which is why it broke. What’s that you say? Pictures? Well, if you insist:

Little WOD/MMA

I made up my mind to try the whole MMA thing today to 1.) mix things up and 2.) buckle under peer pressure, but before I did, I went to the gym for a brief WOD, because I need all the help I can get. The WOD is one I’ve done before, which is 10! of

-30# DB snatch

Last time I did this, I did it with 25# KB and it was way too easy, and I came in at 6:40. I stepped the weight up by 5# and it was still a little too easy at 7:07, by which I mean I didn’t take a single break. I may do it with 32.5# DB next time.

Then I went to Lang MMA and loved every minute with a ‘where has this been all my life’ sort of infatuation. Boy was I glad that I did Crossfit, however, because it is very tiring and you ‘sweat balls’ to quote my male friends. MMA is a good exercise in trust. You have to be able to trust people immediately and get veryvery, like intimately, close to them. I mostly grappled with a 6’3″ 220#er named Brad, which was nice because he was the closest of everyone to my height (he still outweighed me by 40#) and he generously helped me. Danimal was there, but I am absolutely terrified of going against him in a fight because he could tear my head off. He is three inches shorter than me, but outweighs me by 60# and is literally, by-the-numbers, twice as strong as I am (495# DL, 225# Press, 225# OHS, *shudder*).

I am bad at sparring. I never know where to punch people. Dave the coach had me working with the focus mitts to get me used to punching at all. I did that, then he had me do 200 medicine ball slams while walking counterclockwise around the mat, then more work with punching, after my arms were all worn out. All in all, I spent over two hours there and the time flew. I look forward to going again.
