Sort of Barbara and Sort of JT

Posted in barbara, cleans, dead lifts, jerk, knees-to-elbows, rowing on February 1, 2016 by coughingsparks

Saturday was 2 rounds of Barbara:

-20 pull-ups
-30 push-ups
-40 squats
-50 sit-ups

Followed by a 1-mile run/2K row. It was slow. I finished in 28:33. I was very, very slow on the pull-ups and push-ups, and unbroken on the other stuff.

Today was AMRAP 12 minutes:

-12 DL (155#/105#)
-9 HPC
-6 STO
-15 TTB

I scaled the weight way down because my back is messed up again, so even 95# wasn’t enough, so I did it at 65#, with TTB and got 3+27.

True FS PR, Mini-Barb Rx’d

Posted in barbara, front squats, push-ups on December 22, 2013 by coughingsparks

Yesterday was a bit of a mixed bag, and admittedly, 12 Days of Christmas utterly did me in, but it was open gym, and I wanted to make up the 1RM front squat from Thursday because I haven’t done it since PRing the 3RM a few weeks ago:

-45×5
-95×4
-115×3
-125×1
-135×1
-145×1
-155×1
-165×1!

That last one is a true PR, pre-or post-baby. So that’s nice. I didn’t dump weight at any point, but it’s good to finish on a good rep, especially a PR. And it was hard.

I had decided the night before to do something goat-ish, because that’s what I like to do on Open Gym days, although it’s tempting, when left to my own devices, to do something I’m good at, like a made-up WoD with a lot of rowing and kettle bells. So, I decided to do a couple rounds of Barbara:

-20 pull-ups
-30 push-ups
-40 sit-ups
-50 air squats
-3 minute rest

I only had time for two rounds, and was told not to go over 15 minutes. I finished in 20:01, with 7:50 for the first round. It was a bit of a breakthrough because I have never done any version of Barbara with regular pull-ups OR regular push-ups, and I did both. Granted, before, I got three rounds in 23-something with blue band and knees. In retrospect, I probably should have done something else because this was a week that was intensive for both pull-ups and push-ups and I couldn’t string more than two pull-ups. So, probably not the best day to set a benchmark.

What went well: the front squat went as well as I could possibly hope. I did the sit-ups unbroken. I did my first Rx’d version of Barbara. That’s something.

What needs improvement: Any body weight exercise always needs improvement. The push-ups are progressing, but it is a never-ending black hole of improvement, on this, and on the pull-up as well.

I have skipped the push=up progression the last two days because of back-to-back WoDs with push-ups, totaling 100 over two days, but I did get back to it today 8-7-7-6-5

Cindy as Rx’d (In Eamon We Trust)

Saturday I got my third Rx’d benchmark, to add to Annie and Grace. As evidenced by my last post, I had some trepidation regarding Cindy as Rx’d. I figured that I would get maybe three rounds, if I were really lucky:

20 minute AMRAP:

-5 pull-ups
-10 push-ups
-15 squats

I got 9 rounds, 1 pull-up. Yes, everyone throughout the day had more rounds and reps than me but I don’t care. I did it Rx’d. That is all.

Yesterday was the test for the 1RM back squat:

-45×5
-95×1
-135×1
-165×1
-175×1
-185×1
-190×1

That exceeds my body weight (although it didn’t use to — thanks, Paleo diet!), and meets my post-Katrina PR. Finished with three rounds of AMRepsAP:

-One minute thrusters (75/55)
-One minute lateral bar hops (Yuk)
-One minute high hang power snatch (75/55)
-One minute rest

I got 147, which broke down as 51, 51, 45. The lateral bar hops got me. Despite practicing them, they still hung me up, and I was getting maybe 10 each round. Oh well.

Today was the final three-round Barbara for the Paleo challenge, which went B-A-D-L-Y:

Three rounds:

-20 pull-ups (2″ band to knees)
-30 push-ups (knees)
-40 ABMAT sit-ups
-50 squats

I ended up with 23:43, two seconds slower than last time. By round 2, I was already at 14:11, two minutes slower than last time. I know exactly why and I told Eamon as much. Cindy killed, like destroyed, my capacity to do pull-ups and let’s be honest, made doing push-ups difficult too. The last time I did two-round Barbara, I did 15 pull-ups or so right out the gate, and on the second round did, like, 12. Then I was doing sets of three or two after that. Today, on the first round it was 10-2-1-1-1 etc. The second round was 8-2-1-1 etc, then 6-2-1-1-1 etc. I knew I was in trouble from the beginning. BUT. I did the squats unbroken on the first round, which was a first. I refuse to beat myself up about it. I wasn’t going to win the Paleo challenge anyway and I have no regrets about Cindy.

Barbara Week 3

Posted in barbara on February 24, 2013 by coughingsparks

Normally I don’t go to the gym on Sunday, but I am going to be missing tomorrow because it’s Katrina’s first day of pre-school(!). So, today was an ideal day to do two-round Barbara again:

-20 pull-ups (2″ band to knees)
-30 push-ups (knees)
-40 sit-ups
-50 squats
-3 minute rest

Surprisingly, I beat my last time by 22 seconds, coming in at 12:20. Last time I did 12:42, or 14:42 because I took 5 minutes of rest rather than 3, so even that’s not quite accurate.

Barbara F-up

Posted in barbara on February 17, 2013 by coughingsparks

So, I did two rounds of Barbara yesterday for the Paleo challenge, but screwed up and took a five minute rest instead of a three-minute rest, which was this:

-20 pull-ups (2″ band)
-30 push-ups (knees)
-40 sit-ups
-50 squats

Got 14:42. I guess I can extrapolate and say 12:42, but that’s going to be a hard time to beat next week. I got 4:36 out the gate for the first round, which is better than last time, so we’ll see.

Better Barbara

Posted in barbara on February 1, 2013 by coughingsparks

Today was a re-visit of Barbara three-round, which was:

-20 pull-ups (2″ band)
-30 push-ups (knees)
-40 sit-ups
-50 squats

I did the same scaling last time, but took 2:40 off my time with 23:41. So that was good. I’ll up my scaling when I can do the push-ups unbroken. Even with knees, I was doing two at a time, so it’s not time yet to scale it up.

First time Barbara

CFP appears to be deloading this week, which is fine with me. In that spirit, I did 5×5 OHS to start:

45×5
65×5
65×5
65×5
65×5
65×5

Pretty solid overall, but my shoulders are still tight.

Finished with Barbara, three rounds or time of:

-20 pull-ups (green band)
-30 push-ups (knees)
-40 sit-ups
-50 squats
-3 minute rest

I finished in 26:22. I’ve never actually done this one before, but it’s one of the kind I get muscle fatigue on first, rather than being completely gassed. I have no idea how I did, but probably pretty slow as I sort of suck at the first two things.
